Modernizing the API platform behind a leading Indian bank's digital channels

One governed platform for mobile payments, partner enablement, and fraud controls, without taking the bank offline to get there.

Situation

A top-10 Indian bank was deep into its Digital 2.0 program. Mobile payments, partner integrations, and fraud controls all ran through one layer: its APIs. Hundreds of them sat on a legacy Layer7 gateway.

Complication

The gateway was built for an earlier era of banking. Each new payment feature or partner integration meant fresh custom work, and fraud checks had to be bolted onto flows never designed for real-time scoring.

The bank needed customers and partners to get the same consistent experience on every channel. And it could not afford downtime while it changed platforms.

Resolution

SIDGS moved the bank's API estate off Layer7 onto a modern, governed API management platform on Google Cloud, then built the API products on top of it, in three tracks.

Mobile paymentsPayment and account services published as managed API products, with one security and traffic policy applied everywhere.
Partner enablementA developer portal and a standard onboarding path, so partners get credentials and documentation without a custom project each time.
Fraud detectionReal-time risk scoring called at the API layer, so a transaction is checked before it completes, not reviewed afterwards.

Results

400+APIs migrated off Layer7 onto the new platform
800+new APIs built for customer and partner channels
860M+API transactions under management

Today the platform carries the bank's digital channels at scale. New payment features and partner integrations are built on a governed foundation, so each one no longer starts as a custom project.
